Small, Medium and Family Sized Passenger Cars

Small, medium and family sized cars usually have passenger tyres fitted which are more comfortable than other types due to a combination of sidewall height and flexibility. They are by far the most popular type of tyre made and sold due to the high comfort level, low road noise and ease of fitting to most vehicles.

Passenger tyres are commonly fitted to most vehicles on the road and generally have an aspect ratio of "55" or greater. The aspect ratio is the height of the sidewall to the width of the tyre tread. Generally, a greater aspect ratio will be a more comfortable ride.

To find the correct passenger tyre for your vehicle, simply ask the friendly staff at Carnarvon Tyrepower for a tyre that can best suit your driving conditions and budget. Some tyres do cost a little more up front but may offer better on-road abilities and sometimes a mileage warranty as they generally have a longer tyre life.

We recommend considering these tyres for some of the best results in passenger tyres:

  • Toyo Nano Energy.
  • Kumho Acelera.
  • Vitora City Life.
  • Starfire RSC-2.0.
Performance Vehicles

Performance tyres are for the driving enthusiasts among us. These tyres are designed to provide exceptional vehicle handling and on-road grip in specific conditions. Performance tyres generally have a high tread width, and are a low profile tyre with an aspect ratio of "50" or lower (e.g. 235/45R17). With a low sidewall height, these tyres don't have as much sidewall flex which results in crisper steering and a harder ride, while the increased tread width increases on-road traction.

Performance tyres have different designs including directional, asymmetric and non directional tread designs. When selecting your performance tyres ask the friendly staff at Carnarvon Tyrepower tyres that will suit your driving conditions or style - they will help determine the correct tyre for you and your vehicle based on the quality and budget you prefer.

We recommend considering these tyres when you're next looking at some performance based tyres:

  • Toyo T1Sport.
  • Michelin Pilot Sport.
  • Mastercraft Avenger GT (70's old school with white writing).

SUV / 4WD Vehicles

SUV & 4WD vehicle tyres are larger than most standard tyres and have a diverse range of tread designs and construction types, providing options for all the different driving conditions 4WDers encounter.

These tyres come in 5 main types:

    1. Performance SUV tyres - low profile and generally of a highway design offering optimal on-road handling and performance. We recommend the Cooper HTplus or Toyo Versado CUV.
    2. Highway Terrain tyres - designed for drivers who mainly use their vehicles on sealed roads. We recommend the Cooper HT3.
    3. All Terrain tyres - versatile and perform well on sealed and unsealed roads. More aggressive tread blocks than Highway Terrain but still provide a smooth on-road drive while giving good traction off-road. We recommend the Mastercraft AXT, Cooper AT/3 or Toyo OPAT II.
    4. Aggressive All Terrain tyres - focussed off-road ability without compromising on-road ability. Designed for the weekend warrior chasing excellent off-road traction but still needing every day on-road use. These tyres are usually a little noisier on-road than the tyres listed above.
    5. Mud Terrain tyres - when being off-road is a daily occurrence and extreme off-road traction is a must, especially in wet conditions. Very aggressive tread blocks allow supreme off-road traction and mud ejection.
Light Truck and Commercial Vehicles

Light truck and commercial vehicle tyres have a robust construction design for use on heavily loaded vehicles such as vans, small trucks, trailers and caravans. These tyres are made in a range of different brands, sizes and tread types. They also generally have a slightly different numbering system which makes them easy to identify. If you want to check that your tyres are a light truck type, look for an "LT" before or after the size numbers or look for a tyre size with only 2 parameters, e.g. LT265/75R16 or 185R14C.

Light truck and commercial vehicle designs cater for different conditions. For example, a truck that drives on a lot of unsealed roads would benefit from a more aggressive "blocky" tread pattern on the rear, whereas a truck primarily on sealed roads would benefit from tyres in a straight "highway" pattern to increase on-road traction. When searching for the correct tyre it's important to let us know it's purpose and what loads you will carry, and we can help you select the tyre that will best meet your needs. We recommend the popular Toyo H08 or the Starfire RS-V66 for tyres of this type.

Carnarvon Tyrepower are ready to assist you with your 4WD / SUV, passenger or performance car, light truck or commercial vehicle, trailer or caravan needs.
